Peter Kreeft: 10 Insights into Evil from the Lord of the Rings

I've read several books by Dr. Peter Kreeft (Professor of Philosophy at Boston College), two of which are among my favorite books ever. I've had the privilege of hearing him in person on two occasions, at C.S. Lewis Conferences in Austin in 2002 and 2004. The theme of the 2002 Conference was "Rediscovering Evil". Here, Dr. Kreeft presented "10 Insights into Evil from Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings'". I had not read the books at the time and had only seen the first movie. Years later, having seen all 3 movies and read the books as a family, I unearthed my audiotape of Dr. Kreeft's lecture.
Happily, I found a recording of the lecture online...

Why God Made Everything

The ultimate question - why does anything exist? If you get this wrong, all of life is skewed, confusing, and unfulfilled. Pure materialists conclude there is no reason, no purpose. Clearly an unlivable answer. Everyone else acknowledges God (or some eternal god-like force) made everything. So why did God do this?

Common answers are:
God was bored
God wanted friendship
God wanted truly "free" creatures He could love who would "freely choose" to love Him in return.

None of these are the Bible's answer. The short version of the Bible's answer is "God made everything to show forth His glory". The best explanation of this comes from an essay by Jonathan Edwards. The best modern introduction to Edwards' masterful essay is by John Piper. Piper introduces the essay and includes the full text, with helpful footnotes.

Vision Forum: Witherspoon School of Law and Public Policy

While not a lawyer or politician, since I have learned much from Vision Forum's various conferences, I was curious about the Witherspoon conference. I am glad to say these messages are timely and important for professionals and laymen alike. While some specific law cases are mentioned, by and large, these are foundational teachings on how to think and live biblically. These will necessarily affect how we work, educate, and vote. While lawyers may be able to make a more direct impact on public policy, we all need to understand the issues if we are to live faithfully in the complex and bewildering 21st century world....

Update on "Proving God Exists" article

I wrote this short article on "Proving God Exists" about 15 months ago. Last week, it received a rush of new traffic via Stumble-Upon, along with new comments from various readers. Three of the comments led to dialog which may interest theists, Christians, and skeptics alike.
